Yoga, aside from being a popular way of losing weight, is also an effective method of relieving minor to severe body pains. Through the persistent practice of Yoga, diseases caused by working the body too hard may also be cured. Herniated Disc, a disease brought about by lifting heavy objects, is one example. Its symptoms include lower back, hip and leg pains, which is caused by torn ligaments in the body. Severe Herniated Discs need to undergo surgery, and recovery period may take several years. On the other hand, minor ones can be treated by physical therapy and continuous Yoga exercise. For the relief or prevention of back pains, simple Yoga routines such as the Cat-Cow Stretch can be done. The following steps are helpful in relaxing tired muscles: Kneel with the hands, and spread the palms. The wrists should be in line with the shoulders. Place the knees under the hips and put the feet on the back. Facing the ceiling, inhale and let the waist fall. Then, exhale, look down and arch the back, in imitation of a cat. This second exercise assists in strengthening the body by contracting the back muscles. To start the routine, lie face down, with the hands on the sides. Exhale, while doing this, move the upper body a few distance from the floor. This movement is called back extension. Remember to keep the head in line with the body. Move the head back, facing the floor. Repeat these steps, each time moving the head a little higher, without applying too much effort. Perform the routine daily, and increase the number of exercise each day. With over a few days of practicing the routine, back pains are reduced. Discomfort and body pains after performing Yoga may be experienced. This is the result of tightening the muscles in the back too much. This could be avoided by stretching the back muscles after each Yoga exercise. Glen Wood – The Yoga Teacher.
