Egypt is rapidly gaining a reputation as the place to choose for cheap holidays in the sun, but there is far more to enjoy in the country than simply relaxing on the beach, as you will discover if you book a break in Alexandria. The city has its fair share of beautiful beaches, as well as a rich history dating back to the time of Alexander the Great, who is said to have founded the settlement in 331 BC. Alexandria went on to become one of the world's most important cities during the Greek and Roman eras, and you can still see plenty of evidence of that today. Among its most famous sights are the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. This elaborate burial site has influences from Egyptian tradition and Greek and Roman architecture, combining to make a fascinating cultural attraction that is regarded as one of the seven wonders of the medieval world. You are sure to want to see some of the Roman ruins, including Pompey's Pillar, a red granite triumphal monument that is one of the largest ancient monoliths erected. There is also a Roman amphitheatre thought to be around 1,800 years old. Once used for gladiator tournaments, several marble pedestals and columns, together with some of the seating area survive intact. One of the highlights of all Egypt holidays is picking up some souvenirs from a traditional market and Alexandria has a number of bazaars selling locally-made goods where you can test your haggling skills as you buy a few gifts to take home. The Egyptian sunshine and soaring temperatures may mean you don't want to spend all your time exploring the local history or culture. You will find plenty of places to relax on Alexandria's Corniche, including some beautiful white sand beaches ideal for sunbathing and water sports. You may also want to arrange a fishing trip to see if you can catch something for the family's dinner, but won't need to worry too much if the fish prove elusive. There are a host of reasonably-priced restaurants close to the most popular beaches where you will be able to end the day with anything from a traditional Egyptian meal to something a little more familiar to English tastes.
