The custom of sending and giving out greeting cards especially during celebrations and milestones can be traced back to the Ancient Chines tradition, where they would usually have exchanges of cards containing goodwill messages during New Year’s celebration. The Egyptians used papyrus scrolls as cards. But, it was only in the 15th century when card making became a routine in most households, especially before Christmas time in Europe. By 1850’s surge in popularity of expensive greeting cards being sent and delivered to different parts of the world. Today, gift giving would always be matched with special messages enclosed in personalized cards. Card making has also been a great way to bond with kids and explore their creativity. Card making has created several types of cards: 1. Standard Greeting Cards- these are usually cards printed on high quality paper and were produced by companies like Hallmark. Inside these are notes of love, celebrations, friendships and simple greetings. Usually, there is a blank space allotted for sender’s special message to make it more personal and an envelope to enclose this two-folded paper. 2. Photo Greeting Cards- most personalized cards today contain photos of the sender. You would normally receive this kind during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, where family pictures are found at the front cover. It started gaining attention and fame in the early 90’s. There are two types of photo greeting cards: the first was the one earlier mentioned, the other one is a card with an insert in the middle or like a picture frame. This portion would usually serve like an envelope to carry picture/s of the sender. 3. Electronic Greeting cards- even card making has gone online and is following the trend. These are Flash-based (application) cards that are sent via electronic mail or email. Editing and messaging are all done with the use of the computer. These cards may come in 3d, flashing texts, blinking lights and other effects that you would not see in an ordinary still plain paper card. 4. Music Greeting Cards- ever remember the first time you receive a card and when you opened it, there’s a music playing? These are called music greeting cards. Common music themes are Happy Birthday To You, Jingle Bells and Auld Lang Syne. From experience, kids are more appreciative of this type of cards. Although it may be difficult to do music greeting cards at home, there are available kits for card making that may include the small device that plays everytime you open a card.
