Taking pupils out of the classroom and to the scene of historic events is a great way to encourage learning and if you choose Normandy for your educational visits, you will find plenty of things to do and see. The region has a rich history and there is evidence of civilisations dating back to pre-Roman times. It was also the location of one of the most important events of modern times - the D-Day landings. A trip to Normandy will enable you to visit the museum at Arromanches dedicated to the operation to invade Nazi-occupied Western Europe in 1944. From there you can follow the Circuit du Debarquement, taking in all five of the beaches that were the scene of fierce fighting on the day of the Allied landings. Another of Normandy's famous tourist attractions is the Bayeux Tapestry, which tells the story of the events that led up to William the Conqueror's invasion of England and is one of the oldest surviving complete tapestries in the world. While in Bayeux, you may also want to visit the magnificent 11th century cathedral that was once the tapestry's home. Chateau du Baffy, located between Caen and Bayeux, makes an ideal base for educational visits to Normandy. Situated in its own grounds, the chateau has all the facilities your pupils will need and benefits from being within easy travelling distance of the region's historic sites. You will also find a number of picturesque villages and seaside towns located nearby, giving you the opportunity to take in some local culture. There are also lots of opportunities to arrange some activities that pupils may enjoy taking part in. Many of them are related to the famous local cuisine and not all involve tasting frogs' legs and snails. A number of local food and drink producers stage tours, so you will be able to see how goats cheese, calvados, biscuits and chocolate are made. There is even a chocolate museum, if you are looking for an exhibition with a difference for your pupils. The range of attractions on offer means a visit to Normandy should prove to be the ideal combination of enjoyment and education.
