Winter is the perfect time to go on holidays in the Azores. The temperature is mild and perfect for walks to explore the astonishing natural scenery, while it is also the ideal time of year to spot some of the many species of whale often seen just off the coast. An archipelago of nine islands situated in the Atlantic Ocean between Portugal and North America, they are tranquil places home to stunning natural scenery. Aside from fishing and agriculture, there is very little by way of industry on the islands, while tourism itself is in its infancy. Therefore, visitors to the Azores will find themselves in a quiet area, far from crowds. Initially discovered in the 15th century by Portuguese navigators, the islands still retain old traditions and ways of life due to their remote location. While the towns themselves may be more developed, areas outside remain very traditional. Walking is the perfect way to explore the Azores, affording the most opportunities to admire the scenery. The islands are volcanic formations, and as such you will find their beaches feature black sand - with the exception of Santa Maria - rather than the golden or white sand typically found on tourist beaches. They are, however, the ideal locations to sit and admire the view, while the water is suitable for swimming all year round. Home to mountains, sheer cliffs, picturesque green valleys and hot mineral springs, you will find much to explore on foot on all the islands. Each has plenty of walking trails, so you will be able to discover some of the most attractive sights with ease. If you are particularly keen to see some interesting plantlife, you may wish to visit the island of Sao Miguel in particular, which is home to some beautiful gardens. Jardim Antonio Borges in Ponta Delgada features exotic fruits and flowers sure to delight any nature lover. Meanwhile, winter is the perfect time for whale watching in the Azores, when many species can be spotted off the coast. Indeed, 24 of the 80 known species of whale have been seen from the islands' waters, making it an exciting way to spend a day. And during your trip you should sample some of the local cuisine, which is traditionally Portuguese. The fish in the area is particularly good, while the islands also offer some delicious fruits.
