It can often be difficult to narrow down the choices when it comes to Tuscany villas as the region has so much to offer, but if you like spending your holidays in a destination that offers both a seaside setting and some interesting history, then you should look to Lerici. This Tuscan town is located on the coast of the Gulf of La Spezia and there is much for visitors to the region to enjoy. As a pedestrian-only zone, you can look forward to some real peace and quiet during your holiday, allowing you to really unwind. While you could quite happily spend your days lounging in the sunshine and soaking up the culture, there are some attractions that you should not miss. One of the most striking landmarks in the town is its castle, which dates back to the 13th century when the Pisans and Genoese were at war over the area in the Middle Ages. Featuring a pentagonal tower and high curtain walls, the fortification on the edge of the cliff cannot be missed. Inside, the castle houses relics of a different era - with its museum to palaeontology open for all to enjoy - although any children will probably love the dinosaur statues that are located within its walls. Below it, you will find the houses and streets running around Lerici's harbour, which is usually filled with yachts and boats of all kinds. If you want to take a dip, then you will find that three of the Lerici's beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status, denoting them both clean and safe for swimming. Although you may find the perfect family villa in Tuscany, you should make sure that you venture into the town to soak up the atmosphere for at least one evening. In addition to its wealth of restaurants - many serving local seafood - you will also find stalls and shops along the promenade are open well into the night. Take the opportunity to pick up a memento of your visit to this peaceful corner of Italy - or you may simply like sitting back to watch the sun set over the harbour.
