The Cotswolds is home to some spectacular countryside - and one of the best ways of taking in the scenery is on a steam train travelling along the Avon Valley Railway. Originally launched in 1869 to run between Bristol and Bath, the line just so happens to go through some of the most picturesque parts of the Avon Valley. Visitors can travel along part of the railway from Bitton station, which is where the group that maintains the Avon Valley Railway is based. Numerous steam locomotives lovingly restored to their best carry crowds of passengers through the Cotswolds hills throughout the year, with special events being held on a regular basis to make the trip even more exciting. Children will love the Thomas Day Out - where passengers actually get to ride on a train pulled by Thomas the Tank Engine himself - along with the Teddy Bears Picnic and the Santa Specials, which take place in winter as Christmas draws nearer. Adults, meanwhile, are well catered for in the form of the Murder Mystery, Real Ale Festival and Vintage Bus Rally events. Food lovers might want to book a first class ticket for the Steam 'N' Cuisine offering, where passengers get to consume a sumptuous three-course meal while travelling on a steam train. Bitton station itself is interesting to visit - history buffs might be particularly intrigued by how well it has been restored to its former glory, as well as by the various relics from the station's past that are scattered around the site. Elsewhere in the Cotswolds, there is plenty to see and do while staying in self catering accommodation in the area. Major points of interest include the cities of Bath and Bristol and attractions such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Blenheim Palace - Winston Churchill's birthplace - and Hidcote Manor Garden. There are also numerous little villages tucked away from the well-trodden tourist trail that are ripe for exploration. Woodstock, Winchcombe and Northleach are just a few of these, with the latter harbouring a historic church that is often referred to as the Cathedral of the Cotswolds thanks to its unspoilt state.
