When you work in a hotel, is it a job or do you take pride in what you do? Are you a cog in a machine or are you an integral part of a process crucial to someone's happiness? Do you routinely pick out or have some say in which hotel supplies and furnishings the hotel uses to clean and furnish? If you're thinking 'oh God, that's me...' and trying to find a rock to fit under, don't despair. The fix is actually incredibly easy to do. And that's not even the best part. Whether the best part is pretending like you did when you were little or fixing a perspective without a single soul knowing about it...that's up to you. In reality, it's easy to look at hotel supplies, from soap to curtains, as objects you're burdened with buying. It is just as easy to play peek-a-boo with yourself, take a walk around an unoccupied guest room and see things with new eyes. When we see things, any things, through someone else's eyes, it often changes how we see them. Let's take hotel supplies, for example. Instead of being something you buy by the 1000s, look at hotel supplies, be they towels or pens, as an important, useful part of someone's experience in your hotel. Unless you're decorating your place for the first time, admit it, towels aren't that exciting. They are utility items, like other hotel supplies such as drink tumblers and hangers. Not terribly exciting. Don't worry. You aren't the only person thinking that. The relationship between hotels and hotel supplies is a unique one. In many situations, it's OK to have different colors or patterns for hand towels and pens. In hotels, however, hotel supplies must stay consistent. If they're unique amenities posted on a hotel's website, amenities and hotel supplies, must remain consistent. There are people who stay in specific hotels because of the sheets, comforters and complimentary toiletries, among other things. In the eyes of your guests, these items are a critical part of their stay. Hotel supplies are like the human appendix. When things function correctly, no one says a word. It's when it goes haywire or, in the case of hotel supplies, is missing entirely or sub-par that people say something. Let's say, for the sake of the argument, that you are in charge of the guest rooms in your hotel. You've been given a budget but you've also been given creative freedom. As long as the hotel supplies you choose coordinate with the wall colors, the rest is yours to choose. Do you start with the bed, the focal point of the guest room or do guest comments dictate your starting point? Where you'd start redecorating and where guests would have you start may well be separate places with different hotel supplies. The idea is to play peek-a-boo with yourself, with a guest room. See it and the furnishings and hotel supplies through different eyes. People stay in hotels for a wide variety of reasons. Some just need a night away from life, some may be traveling on business and others are on vacation with their families. Whatever their reason, when people stay in hotels they expect a certain experience, specific furnishings and hotel supplies. It's important to try and see things from your guest's perspective, as it'll likely have you upgrading certain hotel supplies, re-thinking others and seeing your hotel in a different light, one that guests will thank you for.
