We spent some time last month covering the bases when it comes to the hardwood mat making process and the steps involved in bringing a hardwood mat or crane mat from a grove of trees to the job site where it becomes a hardworking and reliable tool. There are a lot of steps in the process, and a lot of raw material is required in the building of these hardwood mats. We looked at the very beginnings where a seed becomes a tree and then we moved outward to discover the processes employed by hardwood mat manufacturers like DixieMat. After a tree, or a number of trees are harvested, the lumber is precision cut, drilled and assembled. Once these completed crane mats receive the DixieMat stamp of approval, they are shipped off to the next job where they will mean the difference between a good day on the job site and a day spent trudging through the mud or creating more work by damaging the surrounding environment. As we said earlier, these hardwood mats are most certainly an extremely valuable tool. It might not fit our typical conception of a tool, but these crane mats and hardwood mats are built with one purpose in mind, to ease the burden on equipment, environment, and the workers who’s job it is to see that the job is done right. This, it seems, is the most elemental and essential characteristics of what a tool should be. It should make the burden less by more efficiently working within the constraints of any given situation. In the case of hardwood mats, these situations can be many and varying, although they often share a few important characteristics. Hardwood mats are often found in situations where the burden is largely in gaining access to a difficult to reach place or where the land is sensitive and requires special care. Wherever land, the elements of whether, and the pursuits of man meet, hardwood mats have a pretty good chance of showing up. DixieMat
