Hemis monastery is one of the wealthiest and important monastery in Ladakh. The monastery was found in seventeenth century by Drukpa order. Located approximately 47 km from Leh, on the bank of Indus river, the monastery is stands concealed inside a gorge. The monastery was founded by the first incarnation of Stagsang Raspa Nawang Gyatso in the year 1630. Largest Thangkha in Ladakh is treasured in Hemis festival. Attractions of Hemis Monastery The Hemis monastery is divided into two sections, the Tshogkhang temple on the left and the assembly hall on the right. Varandah of Hemis Gompa is built in exquisite architecture, adorned with unique patterns. Walls are beautified with several frescoes, the Lords of four quarters and the Buddhist 'Wheel of life'. The two historical temples, Du-khang and Tshogs-khnag are worth visiting. The Du-Khang houses a throne of the Rimpoche. The Tshgs-khang has a huge glided statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha, decorated with semi-precious stones. Admire artistic work on walls of the holy shrine are enhanced with stunning paintings of Tantric deities like Samvara and Hevajra and many Buddha figures. Artifacts in Hemis Gompa The monastery is an architectural delight, constructed during the period of Sengge Namgyal. It treasures a beautiful copper gilt idol of Lord Buddha, sacred thankas, gold and silver stupas and several other religious objects. The sacred hermitage above the Ladakh monastery is a great pride for the Hemis Gompa. It was founded by Gyalwa Kotsang and has preserved his meditation cave. One can also see his footprints and hand-print embedded on rocks from time immemorial. Hemis Festival Hemis festival is one of the most popular monastic festivals of Ladakh. People enjoys the extravaganza with great enthusiasm and fervor. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhav, who was the founder of Tantric Buddhism in Tibet. It marked with a huge pageant, held on the tenth day of the Tibetan lunar month, after every 12 years. Catch a glimpse of two-storey high embroidered "Thanka", depicting Guru Padmasambhav, which is highly impressive. It is richly adorned with semi-precious stones and pearls.
