If you are one of the millions of people in the world who are tired of reading the same messages in commercial greeting cards, here’s a tip: personalize it. Better yet, make one yourself. It may not be as easy as going to the store and picking a card that more or less sends the message you would like to convey. But with a touch of creativity, imagination, and the right kind of materials, you might just give more than just a smile on whomever you’re sending the card to. Who knows? You might find that card making may just be the hobby for you. Here’s how to get started on card making: get your hands on some good craft materials. Card stock would be a nice medium to work on because it’s thicker and more durable, which means you can add more materials on it without worrying that the weight might tear the card. To add a shimmer on the card, use iridescent watercolor paints. You can use different stencils on it if you feel like the card stock is too plain. Card making, like scrapbooking, uses embellishments and other decorations to make the card more beautiful to the eyes. The decorations would need to be something that catches attention and should be related to the occasion or celebration. Otherwise, it would just take the mind of the receiver off the message. Embellishments could range from fabric to dyed feathers. Beads may also be used as decorations, as well as commercial pressed flowers or leaves. One important thing to note is that card making does not dictate that you only use fine-tipped markers in writing your message. Be creative. Use glitter glue, neon colored gel pens, or brush pens. You can even write your message in ordinary glue then sprinkle glitter powder before it dries. Other basic materials for card making include scissors, adhesives, paper pens, craft knife and patterned papers. There is no limit as to what you can use…after all, there is no such thing as a limited imagination. Materials can only take you so far in card making. Investing on good quality craft materials is good, but creativity and imagination are essential to making a card whose words and appearance communicate how you feel about the person you are sending it to. Commercial greeting cards are fine. They are convenient, and they are just waiting for you at the shelf, readymade. But making a card for somebody shows how much you value the person by giving your precious, undivided time and effort into making it. And if that doesn’t put a smile on anybody’s face, I don’t know what will. Visit Paper Mill Direct to know more about Calendar 2011.
