Majorca holidays are traditionally all about relaxing on the beach before heading for a drink at one of the many low-cost bars in the bustling coastal resorts, but make the time to visit Lluc and you will see that the island also has history and culture to enjoy. Situated in the north of Majorca, the monastery at Lluc is one of the most sacred sites on the island and attracts thousands of pilgrims keen to see its statue of the Virgin Mary. It is said that the statue was found by a shepherd and a monk by the side of a stream in the 13th century. The statue was taken to a local church, but three times it vanished and was discovered in the same place on the banks of the stream. Local people decided to build a chapel to house the statue at the site where it continually reappeared and Lluc has since developed into an important site for Spain's Christians. It is now home to a monastery, museum, church and choir school. The architecture on show is some of the most impressive in Majorca, while the museum has a fascinating collection of religious artefacts and art works. These things alone make a visit to Lluc a worthwhile day out for people spending family holidays in the resorts of Alcudia and Puerto Pollensa, which are within easy travelling distance. If you make the effort to visit Lluc you will also be able to enjoy some spectacular scenery, as the monastery complex is located in the rugged Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. That makes it a popular destination for walkers and mountain bikers, who are keen to see what outdoor attractions Majorca has away from its beaches. There are a number of trails that begin and end at Lluc and will lead you through some beautiful scenery. If you are looking for something more challenging, you could tackle Majorca's two highest peaks - Puig Major and Puig de Massanella. A day out at Lluc is guaranteed to add something a little different to your Majorca holiday and send you home with a different impression about the island.
