How many people do you know that speak Spanish? In California and Texas, most everyone probably knows at least one person who speaks fluent Spanish. Statistics indicate that nearly 50% of all U.S. Hispanics reside in those two states. Like many southern California residents, I know a ton of Spanish speakers. And I, who has so many Spanish speakers in my life, can only speak a few dozen words in Spanish. I would like to change this fact soon! Have you ever thought about learning Spanish? There are many reasons to learn another language, and if you are a U.S. resident, learning Spanish may benefit your daily life more than you realize. Whether you're a large corporation or small business owner, chances are Spanish speakers are a sought after employee. The simple fact that you can communicate with Spanish speaking customers can immediately increase your customer base. How does this affect your place in the workforce? Employers see this as beneficial, which can also mean a higher salary. If you already both speak Spanish and English and are not being rewarded by your employer, you may want to consider new employment. It could mean a significant increase in your salary! If you ever escape to Mexico like so many southern Californians, you know that street vendors take advantage of non-Spanish speakers. If you speak the language you're probably going to be treated better, which equates to better prices and better service. Traveling to Spanish speaking countries becomes a better cultural experience if the better prices aren't enough to persuade you. Think of how many books you've read in your lifetime that influence your cultural beliefs about your own culture. By simply being able to read Spanish books and newspapers, think about how much more culture you will experience; new ways of thinking and feeling will open up to you. Another great reason to learn Spanish is that it is easy to learn. Vocabulary in Spanish and English are alike in many ways. Not only that, but Spanish is easy to read -- even for a student that is new to learning Spanish. Do you enjoy helping people? You will be better equipped to assist people in your daily life (assuming you answered yes) all thanks to your ability to communicate in at least two languages It goes both ways: you can ask for help in a new language. You'll also be one step closer to the heart of your Spanish culture. You'll also find many restaurants and clubs where Spanish is the language of choice. It's probably safe to say you won't be going there if you don't speak Spanish. You will find it less intimidating to visit predominantly Spanish-speaking establishments once you have a basic understanding of the language. How about instantly increasing the number of cable channels you are able to watch? If you've never tuned into Spanish television, it's a real hoot. No doubt that the Spanish culture is thriving in just about every Spanish program. You may be shocked by what is being said as a first time viewer! The same is true for local Spanish radio stations; the formats between English and Spanish radio differ drastically. And perhaps the best reason to learn Spanish: you will immediately increase your circle of friends by knowing how to speak another language!
