Let’s say you are a photographer who takes fantastic photos, and you even have a fantastic website to show them off. But your website isn’t getting any attention from buyers or fans because it’s just sitting there on your web server. How can this be fixed? How can your website get more attention and start selling photos like you had in mind when you put it up on the web?

The largest source of traffic to any website comes from search engines. Luckily, there are a lot of simple things you can do to make your photography website stand out to search engines and web browsers alike. Begin by optimizing your website for two different types of searches: text searches and image searches.

Utah SEO (search engine optimization) is important for any website. Here is a list of things you can do to make your photography website more noticeable. The more of these techniques you implement, the better you are likely to do.

1. Update Your Site Often
It doesn’t matter what kind of website you have. If you update the content on your website on a daily or weekly basis, search engines are going to pay more attention to them. Many Utah SEO experts have noticed that search engines give higher rankings to sites that are frequently updated. So as a photographer, instead of posting 50 new photos in bulk to your site once a month, post one photo a day, or 5 photos every 3 days. Another great way to keeping new content on your site is to have a blog. Add photos throughout the text on your blog and search engines will flock to your website.

2. Context is Important
Search engines and web browsers alike want to know what your website is about before they have to click on it in search results. Use words like ‘photo’ in all of your file names to keep the context of your website focused on photography. Then think about what type of photos you take. Organize them into categories and subcategories so that you have some context for each page.

3. Place Text Near Your Photos
Having text near the photos that you post on your website will clue search engines about the content of those images. Captions and quotes are also very useful if they include keywords and apply to your photos. This will give your photos the maximum value in search engine rankings.

4. ALT Tags
When you add an image to your website, give it an ALT tag. Include an explanation of what the image depicts. This makes it easy for search engines to decide what your photographs are about and allows them to categorize your website in search results. You should also make sure the actual file name contains the same keywords as your ALT tag description.

5. Blogging
Blogs are generally updated regularly, which means people and search engines come back again and again to read more. Images in blogs are often numbered in the top of image search results. It is also a lot easier to add Utah SEO to a blog than it is to an image-led website.

6. Title Attributes
The Title tag is similar to the ALT tag because search engines read these first to categorize your website in search results. These two tags are different in that the ALT tag is not meant to be used to provide additional information about an image. But the Title tag is. Include similar keywords in each of these tags, but feel free to embellish a little more in the Title tag.

7. Keywords in the Page Titles
A page title is a header tag that causes text to appear in the top bar of the window when the page is open in your browser. Each page of your website should have a different title according to what type of information that page contains. This is where you should be using your keywords the most.

8. Smart Linking
The links you have in your text is called anchor text. This is the text that is underlined or has a special color assigned to it. This text should be descriptive and contain keywords that are relevant to the page it takes you to. Instead of saying ‘click here’ in your anchor text, say ‘wedding photos’ or ‘nature photos’. That way search engines and web browsers know exactly what they will see when they click on that link.
