Take in dramatic scenery by going on walking tours of the Canadian Rockies

Travel & Tourism
If you're keen to take in some stunning natural scenery during Canada trips, be sure to head to the country's Rocky Mountain range.

By taking walking tours through the Canadian Rockies you will be able to see breathtaking mountains, forests and valleys, as well as getting some exercise and fresh air at the same time.

The majority of the Canadian Rockies is contained within four of the North American country's national parks - Jasper, Banff, Yoho and Kootenay - as well as several provincial parks. And as the mountain range is also on the Unesco World Heritage List, you are sure to find that going on small group tours through the region allows you to take in some captivating natural scenery.

Indeed, going on walking tours of the Canadian Rockies allows you to take in natural splendours from glaciers and hot springs to caves and waterfalls. Of course, there is plenty of opportunity to see mountains as well, with the largest in the region - Mount Robson - standing some 3,954 metres tall.

Walking tours of the Canadian Rockies give you the chance to go through ever-changing scenery and with so much to take in, there is certain to be something new for you to see at every turn.

However, the vast mountain range offers more than just awe-inspiring landscapes, although these are certainly in abundance. It can also prove to be a great place to visit if you are an animal lover. As you make your way along the various trails and paths during your walking tour, you are likely to come across a wide variety of wildlife, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled.

This can particularly prove to be the case if you take a trip through Banff National Park. Located in Alberta, Banff - which is Canada's oldest national park - contains creatures such as beavers, moose, cougars and bison.

Wolverines and bears are also among the animals that can be found in Banff, while you may want to a look to the skies during your walking trip for the chance to spot birds such as the bald eagle, pygmy owl and sharp-shinned hawk.

However, you will find there is fantastic wildlife to be found all throughout the Canadian Rockies. The mountain range is thought to be home to 69 different kinds of mammals, 277 species of birds and dozens of fish, amphibians and reptiles, so whatever kind of animals you're into, take the time to look around while on walking tours of the Rockies to see what creatures you can spot.

You should also endeavour to head to Jasper National Park, which joins Banff via the Icefields Parkway. As there are over 660 miles of hiking trails here, you are bound to find lots of captivating scenery - be sure to bring your camera so you can capture some of this on film!

To get a bird's eye view of this awe-inspiring national park, take the cable car up to Whistler Mountain, not to be confused with the famous Whistler ski resort. As you make your way up to the summit, you will be able to see how Jasper's scenery has developed over the years.

Walking through the national park gives you the chance to visit splendours such as the Miette Hotsprings, Athabasca Falls and Maligne Lake - which is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies. A trip to Mount Edith Cavell, meanwhile, allows you to see spectacular views of Angel Glacier. However, if you fancy a bit of a change from walking you can hire a bicycle and take to the various trails and paths by two wheels.

You will find Banff - which spans for some 2,564 square miles - offers a wide variety of mountains, glaciers and valleys for you to explore. And with a vast array of paths and trails to choose from, there should be plenty of opportunity for you to pull on those hiking boots and stretch your legs. Many of these routes go along the park's Lake Louise, providing a scenic backdrop to your walk.

After a day traversing the trails, you can take a breather and give your feet a well-earned rest by chilling out at Banff's hot springs before getting ready for some walking through the Canadian Rockies.

Also not to be missed is the Mount Robson Provincial Park. As the mountain from which its name is derived is the tallest in all the Canadian Rockies, you should find the scenery here to be particularly special. Again there are a variety of paths for you to choose from, so there should be something suitable for walkers of all levels of experience.

Wherever you go on walking tours of the Canadian Rockies, you are bound to find the natural scenery to be simply captivating.
