If you're looking for an inexpensive break at a ski apartment for half term, you might want to consider whisking your family away to Verbier in Switzerland. You might be surprised by the amount of cheap accommodation in Verbier and a break to the region could be just what your children need to help them have some fun away from school during the holidays. The resort is situated in the south-western area of Valais and is a well-established skiing location for all levels of skier. Whether you're a novice or well-accomplished on the slopes, the resort has something to cater for everyone. Parts of the resort are spread over the four valleys at an altitude of 1,500 metres and you'll have plenty of room to ski as there are over 410 km of runs. Start out on the beginners' slopes if you're not confident on your skis yet, but for those looking for a challenge, there's always the towering Mont Fort glacier. The glacier boasts the highest altitude of all the peaks at the resort, jutting 3,300 metres into the air. But if that's a bit daunting, you might enjoy a visit to the snowpark of Neipark in La Chaux. Here you'll find three freestyle slopes to cater for different abilities accordingly. If you'd like to try some new snow sports, you could always have a go at snowboarding, or even tobogganing on the two slopes dedicated to the pastime. And for some peaceful time together with the family, why not take a hike along the 25 km of marked paths? Spend some time on dry ground and you'll find Verbier has much more to offer than skiing and snow-based activities. The picturesque hamlet is full of attractions - for some history you might want to visit the remains of the medieval castle, thought to have been constructed in 12th century, or stop off to explore the nearby Roman ruins. Another great day out could be spent at the St Bernard Dog Museum, where youngsters will delight in seeing the canines at play and you can learn about the historic Great St Bernard Hospice for travellers in Switzerland, as well as the St Bernard Pass, which is the oldest trail through the western Alps. On a break to Verbier, you're sure to find there's so much more to the region than snow.
