We’ve been looking pretty closely at the history of freight transport in America, and more specifically, the history of the railroad and rail transport in the country. This is a big topic and there is a lot of ground to cover. We could give a brief overview of all things rail transport, but that’s not the way things work here on the JB Transport blog. There are just too many angles to explore and too many interesting bits of information to look at in the process of learning more about freight transport via rail. Last week we looked at an overview of the industry and included a few details like different freight transport company classification and other interesting tid bits while opening up an introduction to the history of the rails. Today, were going to embark on that history and see what is really at the core of the rail transport industry. So as not to put the cart before the horse, we are going to start from the beginning, just as we have with every other topic or industry we’ve explored. As we all know, to get at the core of an issue, it is good to go to the roots. So, where might we find the roots of the American freight transport industry. Well, for that we need to look to the early part of the 1800’s when the first notions of rail transport were catching hold in America… still just a sparkle in its mother’s (or, in this case, father’s) eye. Samuel Homfray was one of the first to put ideas of the train engine to work and breathe life into the soon to be bourgeoning industry that expanded a nation, accelerated the advancement of industry, and birthed the industry of rail transport and freight transport via the cold steel track. In the coming blogs, we’ll examine the progression the railroad, and subsequently rail transport, would take and the changes it would bring… all in the name of freight transport! http://www.jbtransport.com JBT
