3 Types of Indian Beaches

Travel & Tourism
The 6,000 km long Indian coastline harbors some of the most spectacular beaches in the world. The heterogeneity of the coastline ensures diverse recreational facilities and beachside activities. Therefore, tourists visiting India to enjoy a beach vacation must first determine the type of holiday they desire. Some may seek tranquility and peace, while others may be on the look out for a whole lot of fun and frolic. Yet others may be in search of adventure sports. Indian beaches cater to the different needs of vacationers and are accordingly classified into various types.

Types of Indian Beaches

India, surrounded by water on three sides, abounds in beaches. There are beaches in Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Chennai, Maharashtra and Pondicherry, among others. Some of the most popular Indian beach destinations are Goa, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar, and Kerela. Indian beaches are sought after for the following reasons:

Water sports: Those interested in white water rafting or kayaking can consider visiting Rishikesh, Shivpuri or Kullu-Manali. The Holy Ganges flows through Rishikesh and the Beas River cuts across Kullu, providing ideal rafting spots for adventurous souls. In addition to these, there is the Kali River in Uttarakhand as well as the Kundalika River near Mumbai, which offer great rafting opportunities.

Skiing, boat racing, scuba diving options are also available in Rishikonda beach in Vishakhapatnam and in Dona Paula, Baga as well as Arjuna beaches in Goa. Other beaches that are famous for adventure sports include Kavaratti, Kalpen and Kadamat beaches in Lakshadweep and the Cinque Island beaches near Port Blair.

Relaxation: If relaxation from the busy everyday schedule is what you are looking for, the best place would be Kerala. Sipping a glass of coconut juice, stretched out on a swing, with green palms swaying overhead, and enjoying the view of the cobalt blue sea…is the ideal way to relax and unwind for many. Kovalam, Varkala and Tanur beaches can offer similarly restful holidays.

The beaches at Wandur, Havelock and those around the Neil Islands in Andaman and Nicobar also make for rejuvenating vacation spots. The sylvan shores, the sun-soaked beaches and the crystal-clear waters of Lakshadweep, make it seem like a dreamland. Minicoy and Kadamat are the most popular beachside destinations for relaxing and basking in the sunshine.

Fun and frolic: If snorkeling and sun-bathing are your idea of fun, there can be no place better than the Arambol, Agonda or Candolim beaches in Goa. Surfing and body boarding facilities are also available in the Puri and Gopalpur beaches of Orissa.

Apart from these, India also hosts some secret beaches that prove ideal for restful holidays. Shankarpur beach in Bengal and Radha Nagar beach in Havelock are two such beaches.
