Keeping the kids entertained when they are off on school holidays or during closures can be a hard task, especially when they don't have all of their friends around to keep them company. You may be tempted to try and persuade them that the games that kept you busy when you were a child yourself are a good idea, but bear in mind the fact that the world has changed a lot since then and your suggestions may be met with derision on their part. Instead, why not try and compromise between the modern things they want to do and the traditional ways you'd prefer they passed their time? The internet is everywhere these days, and the chances are that your children are far more tech-savvy than you are, but that doesn't mean that you can't use it to your advantage. Instead of watching them listlessly surf the web with no real purpose why not set them a challenge - work out a treasure trail that sends them from one website to another using the links on the sites and the content as clues. Alternatively, you could use the internet to help get your child enthused about crafts or cooking by finding instructional videos on sites such as YouTube. These videos give handy tips and can be a very inspiring way to show children how much fun baking a tray of cupcakes can be. You could even suggest that they make their own videos and share them online if they become particularly good at some creative pursuits. If your kids are keen on cartoons and TV shows, then why not encourage them to make some shows of their own? Most modern smartphones have a video function on them while digital cameras mean that stop-motion animation is a viable possibility for most people these days. If you get your children to create a fan-piece based on their favourite show then you're sure to find that their enthusiasm is sparked. Of course, not everything needs updated and sometimes the thing you'll most want to do as a family is sit down and enjoy a great film or TV series. Make watching a film together an occasion by popping some popcorn and switching off the lights and search through the channels for the perfect movie to laugh over together. With all of channels available on packages such as free Sky, you're sure to be able to find something the whole family agrees on - eventually!
