Are you about to graduate from one of the many on site colleges in Dallas, or from one of the multitude of online colleges? If so, it means that you’ll be hitting the job market soon and that prospect can seem a little daunting. Rather than let the enormity of the task overwhelm you, start small and specific. There are the obvious places to look such as classified ads or government employment service centers, but don’t let your search end there. Online job boards are another great place to start and there are many out there to check. This service should be free. Should a site ask for payment prior to releasing job leads, move on. Don’t forget when applying online that you still need the all important follow up contact part of the job search. Even if you send your application electronically, it is important to follow up, even if that means another email reiterating your interest in the position rather than a phone call. Good and regular follow up contact can be the one thing that sets you apart from other applicants. Networking is another means of job search that is often overlooked. Talk to people, put yourself out there. Happen to strike up a conversation with the person sitting next to you on the bus or in a café? Ask them what they do because you really never know when you might bump into a potential ally in your job search. Maybe they’re in your field or know someone who is, so talk to people you know as well as people that you meet through out the day. Lastly, make a list of perspective employers in Dallas that you have an interest in working for. A quick search online should be able to provide you with the correct contact name to address your cover letter. Mail or hand deliver your credentials and don’t forget to follow up with a phone call or visit by the end of the week. This can be done prior to successfully complete your program at whichever of the colleges in Dallas or online degree program that you have chosen. Let prospective employees know that you are going to be hitting the Dallas job market and that you’re ready to work for them. Starting a few weeks before graduation can give you the extra time to land that dream job before other graduates have even started thinking about it.
