SPECULATIVE METAPHYSICS AND NEW AGE RELIGION: Jatinder Pal Singh Assistant Professor PGGC – 11 , Chandigarh. Metaphysics is a branch of science that is not easily defined. It is concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world. The word derives from the Greek words Meta (meaning "beyond") and physika (meaning "physical"), "physical" referring to those works on matter by Aristotle in antiquity. The prefix Meta- ("beyond") was attached to the chapters in Aristotle's work that followed after the chapters on "physics," in posthumously edited collections. Aristotle himself did not call these works Metaphysics. Aristotle called some of the subjects treated there "first philosophy.” The metaphysician also attempts to clarify the notions by which people understand the world. Before the development of modern science, scientific questions were addressed as a part of metaphysics known as natural science"; the term "science" itself meant "knowledge. The famous double slit experiment used a set of single electrons fired one after the other through two slits. The result was an interference pattern which is characteristic of a wave and not a particle. This implied that each single electron would go through both slits; through no slits; through just the left slit and through just the right all at the same time! Quantum field theory explains this by stating that matter is neither a wave nor a particle. It is something more abstract and could be considered as a simultaneous co-existence of all possibilities. This leads to the idea of superposition i.e. all possibilities potentially existing at the same time. The religious scripture mentions the idea of superposition as being an intrinsic part of creation and the creator.” You have thousands of eyes, and yet you have no eyes. You have thousands of forms, and yet you do not have even one. You have thousands of lotus feet, and yet you do not have even one foot. You have no nose, but you have thousands of noses. For the spiritually wise, doubt and fear are dispelled.” Another finding from the famous double slit experiment was that when scientists put cameras at each of the slits to observe the actual slit through which any given electron was passing through they discovered that the electrons behaved like particles and created only two bands on a screen instead of an interference pattern. So matter behaved differently when interacting with thoughts or the mind. The religious scripture also goes further to mention that mind or consciousness and matter are interchangeable and that the spirit of God rests within both.” You yourself are conscious of your creation." "Wherever i look, i see the lord pervading there, in the union of consciousness and matter." "The distinction between mind and matter has been destroyed, and the darkness has been dispelled." "He himself is mind, and he himself is matter." The theory which we call Quantum Mechanics is very strange. Because when we are talking about mechanics it means that we can imagine and see this process visually. But quantum mechanics came with no visual aids, no model to picture in one's mind. Now this theory is a purely mathematical formalism, difficult to use and impossible to visualize. It simply gives the right answers to the most complicated theoretical question. Such situation may satisfy few of physicists. But there are few physicists who don't agree with this situation. They want to understand quantum mechanics without paradoxes. I consider that these paradoxes are connected with only one reason: “Nobody pays attention to the geometrical form of particles". Now the physicists follow "pure" mathematics. There is difference between "pure" mathematics and the mathematics of theoretical physics." Pure" mathematics is infinite and the mathematics of theoretical physics is limited by natural laws. The "pure" mathematicians have all rights to create and use abstract models. Physicists must use mathematical apparatus in connection with real objects, with real particles. Part of the quantum debate is about the standards we should use for evaluation. In the scholarly world of theoretical mathematicians, proof is possible and is expected. But proof is impossible in science, so scientists are more practical; instead of demanding certainty, we aim for a rationally justified confidence in a "good way to bet." For example, the Second law of thermodynamics is based on probabilities, not certainty. If you place a drop of food color in a glass of water, the color will spread throughout the water. Can you be totally certain that this process will not reverse itself, with an un-spreading in which all of the color moves back into the drop? No, this reversed process is not impossible, it's just extremely improbable. The statistics of large numbers is the scientific basis for the Second Law, which claims that some types of events will be extremely improbable, even though not impossible. PROBABILITY is why large-scale events have thermodynamic irreversibility, and is the basis for the directionality of time that is accepted by scientists and nonscientists, with time running "forward" when events occur in ways that are more probable. If we made a molecular movie of the color-spreading process and ran it backward, every individual collision between molecules would obey the laws of physics, but the overall process would disobey the Second Law and it would appear to be running backward in time, in a strange un-natural way. Why? Most actual processes occur in the way we expect because a time-reversed process, violating the Second Law, would be extremely improbable so time-reversal does not occur naturally. Things that are possible on a small scale become practically impossible on a large scale. Scientists cannot prove that a reversal of color spreading is impossible, but they can show that betting against it is an extremely good way to bet, and you will always be correct. Using similar principles of probability, scientists can show that unfamiliar small-scale behaviors produce familiar medium-scale behaviors and familiar large-scale behaviors. Scientists cannot prove this, but can show that it's an extremely good way to bet.
