From William the Conqueror through to the D-Day landings of World War II, Normandy has plenty of history to keep pupils on a school trip occupied. Learning outside the classroom is a great way to bring history to life for your pupils and help them understand about different events and periods throughout the years. Why not start your school trip with a visit to see the Bayeux tapestry? This large and detailed piece of art depicts the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066, when William the Conqueror defeated Harold to become king of England. While you are looking into this period of history, you could also pay a visit to the village of Falaise, which is the birthplace of the monarch. But Normandy is undoubtedly most famous for its role in World War II when its beaches became the location for the D-Day landings. The Circuit du Debarquement will take you on a tour around five of the beaches involved in the historic event - Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah. You could even get your pupils to re-enact the landings themselves, running in groups along the sand towards the dunes. Another stop that you should visit if you are studying the D-Day landings is Arromanches, a small seaside town that played a vital role in the success of the allied operation. But a trip to Normandy doesn't just have to be about history. There are numerous opportunities for you to get under the skin of French culture and particularly its cuisine. From chocolate manufacturers to bakeries and a goat cheese farm, your pupils will be able to sample various culinary delights while learning about the process that goes into producing them. For an authentic French experience, you should stay in a chateau. On the outskirts of Colombiers-sur-Seulles is Chateau du Baffy. This is ideal accommodation for large school groups, with two acres of parklands surrounding the chateau, giving the children plenty of space to let off some steam. Its proximity to many of the most famous landmarks in Normandy makes it an excellent choice for any school trips you may be planning to the area. STS School Travel Service are a study tour company that provides learning outside the classroom.
