If you often receive greeting cards, then chances are that your home is just about beaming with these notes from thoughtful people. Well, it's great to store them in a box or make an album out of them, but if they aren't that memorable to display or store, then you might as well throw them away, right? Wrong. You can still create a couple of things from old greeting cards. Make fancy gift pouches or tube containers. Small gift items like bracelets, charms, hair clips, cell phone accessory, a pair of socks, and underwear can fit inside a gift pouch created from an old greeting card. To do this, select a card made from a sturdy cardboard. Measure into the cardboard two adjacent rectangles, but leave enough space for a tab of half an inch. Score the cardboard where you will fold it into three parts – two rectangles and one tab. Join both ends by folding in the tab towards the inside and pasting it onto the other end. Make arcs on both ends of the tube, and cut the excess off. Score curves that mirror the arcs at each end. Open the tube and then fold the arcs at one end inwards. Place the gift item inside and then fold in the arcs at the other end. Seal the tube with a ribbon or secure both ends using a tape or sticker. Create Christmas-theme place-mats using old greeting cards. Gather your old Christmas cards. Cut them out into similar shapes – rounds, ovals, squares, rectangles. Cut two sheets of clear contact paper into your desired place-mat size. Peel off the paper backing of the contact paper and secure it onto your working table using a removable tape or paper weight. Arrange the greeting card cutouts onto the contact paper, covering all areas between the cutouts. Peel off the paper backing of the other piece of contact paper and place it over the arrangement. Smooth it out and then trim the edges, at least half an inch away from the greeting card cutouts. Now you have a makeshift Christmas place-mat. You can actually make an oval place-mat, rectangular place-mat, or a coaster (using one greeting card cutout) if you like. Just try out several arrangements and see which works for you. So now you know how to create gift pouches and place-mats from your old greeting cards. Think of other ways to recycle your old greeting cards.
