There are different types of adhesives available for cardmaking. A certain project or a specific material would usually require one or two types. It helps to know the properties and uses of various adhesives to decipher which one is best to use. For the purpose of this discussion, let's talk about the two types of adhesives: glues and tapes. General purpose glue – Also called craft glue, this dries up considerably fast and clear. It works with a vast range of media, including wood, paper, glass, metal, ceramics, and plastic. However, many craft glue can warp or wrinkle paper, so apply it liberally or sparingly. Candle glue – This one is often called glue stick, and is applied using a glue gun. It is very handy to use in many types of cardmaking projects because the result is neat, sturdy and clear. However, glue stick is not ideal for attaching small embellishments like buttons and beads. All in all, glue stick works well with wood, plastic, glass, paper, and fabric. Glue dots – These highly adhesive dots are dispensed on a roll of paper. They are called glue although they appear and function like a tape. They provide a three-dimensional effect because they are tiny and thick. Glue pen – If you want to create a neat cardmaking design to be decorated with glitter or attach small items on a surface, then the ideal adhesive to use is a glue pen. Glue is secreted from a small hole, allowing you to draw lines or create small dots. Glue spray – This one is suitable for working with lightweight items like mulberry paper, light fabric, and tissue. It is ideal for large areas, as well. Removable tape – This type of adhesive is great for securing media as you do card making, like holding the paper as you cutout a window or heat the embossing powder. It can easily be removed, and doesn't normally leave marks or tears. There are many types of removable tape, such as scotch, masking, drafting, and painter's tape. Double-sided tape – This adhesive has two sticky sides. Some are dispensed as a tape roll and others as small pre-cut pieces. The double-sided tape is very versatile but can be hard to remove and generally leaves ugly marks. They are semi-permanent. Floral tape – This is a stretchy, green tape that is commonly used to wrap flower stems and other decorations. When you use dried flowers and other natural embellishments on your card making artworks, it is best that you wrap unsightly wires and stems with floral tape for a neat and pretty result. Mounting tape – This double-sided tape with foam is a heavy duty adhesive ideal for mounting heavy projects and items. It has a layer of foam at the center that gives some depth to the project.
