The wireless application development arena has witnessed some of the most interesting innovations and has seen the functionality of the cellular phone rise from being just a communications device to much more. The increasing augmentations have meant an increased reliance on the diminutive device. Mobile application development communities across the world strive every moment to expend the existing potential and push the boundaries of the wireless application development arena. Voice control has long since been considered the apt alternative to using your fingers for texting or calling or using the phone in general. It’s ingenious and thoroughly innovative but it has been around for quite some time. The mobile application development segment has been striving to find another viable option and has stumbled across the eye tracking system that can be used to operate a smart phone. Eye movement is the foundation on which the tracking is based. This technique has been used for years to allow physically disabled individual to access and use computer systems. A system called the “EyePhone” has already been conceptualized and is being touted as the technology that heralds a new era in offshore mobile application development. Only elementary efforts have so far been invested into the realization of the concept as it is proving to be a challenge to replicate the features facilitated by a desktop on a cellular phone. The issue is that the cellular device is mobile, the person and the phone keep moving and the immediate surrounding environment is also dynamic and instantaneously changeable. Small movements of the user can also lead to massive triggers that can blur the reception. This was countered using an innovative algorithm that identifies the human eye in different conditions. The system goes through an elaborate training phase where it is allowed to get used to the identification of the human eye at varying distances and under different lighting. This marvel of mobile application development needs to be calibrated by taking a picture of both the eyes in indoor as well as outdoor environments. The “EyePhone” runs on the Nokia 810 smart phone and tracks the user eye position relative to the screen. Blinking allows selection and the program places a virtual “error box” around the eye recognizing it till it drops out of the box dimensions. This is accomplished by dividing the camera frame into nine regions and identifying the eye position in one of those regions. Approximate estimates put the accuracy of this innovative mobile application development wonder at around 76% in daylight and when the user is still and 60% when the user is mobile. This “EyePhone” system is still grappling with teething challenges but it sure does give a glimpse of the immense potential that the offshore mobile application development and the wireless application development arenas possess.
