In recent months, we’ve been doing a lot of talking about the oil spill from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig which exploded in the gulf and continued to bleed oil into the gulf of Mexico. In looking at the issues surrounding oil spill clean up, hardwood mats have been at the focal point of our discussion. Obviously, this is blog about all things hardwood mats, so it can be expected that our discussions will revolve around crane mats, swamp mats, timber mats, and any other kind of mat that hardwood can be used to build; nonetheless, there is good reason to keep returning to the role that hardwood mats have played and will continue to play in reaching the hard to reach areas that must be accessed to help in the clean up process… and that reason is that they work! Hardwood mats are renowned for pioneering access into the inaccessible. This month we’re going to take a trip into the workings and mechanisms behind the mats. We’re going to uncover the secret to what makes a hardwood mat so successful at doing what it does best. This might sound like a moot point, but access to remote areas with heavy machinery, equipment, and even smaller vehicles can be an all but impossible task if the conditions of the land are difficult to work with. Loose soil, wet soil, thin soil, and no soil (but instead slippery clay or mud) are all major players in what can result in an area being inaccessible to vehicular travel. There is no shortage of these kinds of areas in the United States or anywhere really. There are difficult to reach places all across the globe. Now, that fact alone is obviously not enough to warrant the need for hardwood mats, but, the real kicker is this, these areas often must be accessed. Growing populations and an increasing demand of electricity and other resources that require pushing beyond the bounds of the accessible are all reasons that contribute to the need for the versatile and enterprising hardwood mat in its many forms. In our next blog we’ll tackle the question of how these swamp mats and crane mats really work. www.dixiemat.com
