In North America, family traditions are a well known fact. Christmas traditions are one of the most popular and each can be handed down from generation to generation. These traditions help families to bond together in the giving season and bring about many memories to be shared. One popular tradition among families is to go out and select a Christmas tree. Once the tree has been picked out and brought home, hot chocolate is made while the family decorates the tree. Stories of Christmas' past can also be shared and newer members of the family can also get a better feel of what the family is all about. Another popular Christmas tradition, especially in larger families, can be to do a secret Santa. Each member of the family can pull a name and the name they pull they will buy a Christmas gift for. This is a great idea among adults as everyone can buy gifts for the children. This is a great way to save some money while having a good laugh at some of the sillier presents that can be given. Holiday dishes are also another holiday family tradition. These dishes usually consist of recipes that have been passed down through the family for generations. These dishes can be made at home, or when the family gets together on the holiday. Some families may even choose to create their own unique cards to send out with a picture of their children to show just how big and cute they are. If there is a new baby in the family others may choose to purchase a first ornament for the tree to celebrate the newest arrival. Sometimes, due to distance, some families are only able to gather during the holidays and they may have to choose to have a portrait taken of everyone in their festive holiday gear. Roasting marshmallows or chestnuts in the fire may delight family members of all ages. Creating Christmas decorations to adorn the Christmas tree is another popular Christmas tradition in North America as well. Some families may even choose to "adopt" a child in need and may work together so that the child in need may have a wonderful Christmas. There are a lot of charities and soup kitchens that families may choose to help to celebrate the good tidings of the season and celebrate the unity of the Christmas holiday. Each Christmas tradition holds its own meaning to each family. Every year maybe a new tradition can be started as well.
