Dieting is a relatively new phenomenon and our ancestors never purposely tried to lose weight. This modern day trend is responsible for more health problems than the original overweight condition it was supposed to resolve. Everybody knows by now that you can lose weight by dieting but the problem is it always comes back on again. It is estimated that 95 percent of all diets fail and they leave in their wake problems with the way the body processes fuel (calories) for energy. Once you get caught up in the 'diet' trap or the 'yo-yo; dieting syndrome not only do you gain the original weight back, you will gain additional pounds further increasing your weight every time you go on another diet. The damage is caused when not enough food is eaten or even when carbohydrates are reduced too much causing a chemical imbalance. The body goes into 'diet shock' when it worries about its long term food supply and throws itself into preservation mode. This is an ancient protective measure against food shortages which allow the body to function and make do with whatever is there. It is exactly the opposite of what is needed for weight loss as firstly, the metabolism (the body's engine) is slowed to conserve energy. This means the body does not need as much fuel to run its systems and becomes very efficient and starts storing more fat to protect itself from what it perceives as starvation. So, if you cannot burn up fuel you cannot lose weight. Secondly, with the reduction in metabolism comes a loss of energy and because you have no energy you become less active which is not what is needed to burn fat. A proper exercise program made up of mostly strength training exercise is the only way you can give your fat burning machinery - your muscles - a tune up so they burn more fuel for the long term. The consequences of this situation are that not only do you end up not losing weight if you continue to cuts back on your food intake the problem will only get worse. The chemical imbalance and metabolic stress that you are creating will lead you to serious health problems down the track. For our metabolism to work properly and regulate body weight it needs certain things to remain healthy and do its job. First, quality unprocessed food needs to be eaten every 2-3 hours and each of these meals needs to contain a portion of protein and a portion of complex carbohydrates. Enough food needs to be eaten to keep under the radar of the 'starvation mode'. Second enough effort needs to be put into the strength training program to keep the metabolism running hot. The muscles are where fat is burned for energy so their health and condition is crucial if weight is to be lost. Weak flabby muscles will never get you a lean body.
