The best way to access the internet while you’re on the road is to connect your mobile phone with your laptop to a broadband service. Your mobile phone can be used as a modem but the data transfer speeds can be low. The first thing you need to confirm is to check with your service provider to see if your phone can be used as a modem. Once you have a data-capable phone, you’ll have three options to connect it to your laptop: USB, infrared (IrDA), or Bluetooth. If you see speed wise, it doesn’t matter which one you use as the data transfer rate between your carrier and your phone is slower than the one between your phone and your computer. If you have a CDMA mobile phone, you may not have Bluetooth; you may have USB to connect to the internet. With GSM phones, you can go with Bluetooth. If you are not sure of your phone’s capabilities, you can contact the phone’s manufacturer or check its documentation. Almost all laptops have USB ports which can either be used for cabling to a mobile phone or for adding Bluetooth. If you connect via Bluetooth, you need to be sure that both devices, phone and laptop are Bluetooth enabled. To connect your phone to your laptop via Bluetooth, you first have to pair the devices which authorize the two devices to securely talk to each other. Once such a pair is created, it’s remembered, and the process doesn’t have to be repeated. The general procedure goes like this: 1. Activate the Bluetooth option on your mobile phone. 2. By choosing the appropriate command, which is sometimes called ‘show phone’, make your phone discoverable. 3. Turn on Bluetooth on your laptop. 4.Pair the phone with the laptop. In the Bluetooth preference pane, open the Devices tab and click on ‘Set Up New Device’ to launch the Bluetooth Setup Assistant. Then follow the on-screen instructions for setting up a mobile phone.
