Female baby boomers fueled the fitness revolution in the 1970's when we discovered aerobics, jogging and jazzercise as 20 something year olds. Now in the 21st Century over 40 years later those same baby boomer women are in their 50's, 60's and beyond. For those women being physically active is not longer just a choice of recreation, entertainment or 'fun'. It is an important non negotiable health decision. Even if you are a female baby boomer who sat out and did not get involved in the so-called fitness revolution way back when it started, do not worry - it is never to late to get started on a structured intentional proper exercise program and reap the multitude of benefits. As baby boomers we have always been concerned about how we look and nothing has changed. Today we not only want to look good, we also want to feel good. And feeling and looking good mean 'youthful'. We have witnessed our elderly parents suffer and lose their independence and we want to avoid this aspect of aging. To delay aging or slow it down we have to dig down to cellular level, Aging begins when cell death occurs and if we can defer this we are in effect deferring the aging process and we can do this with proper exercise. If we do not do enough muscle building and maintaining activity we are missing out on the best anti aging tool the human body has. When we work our muscles intensely it stimulates 'growth and repair' hormones that instruct cells and tissues to rebuild, repair, renew. Old worn out cells and tissues are then replaced with younger, stronger and healthier ones. If we do not get these 'youth' hormones regularly chemicals give the opposite message to the cells - decay, degenerate and die as the body is getting the message that strength is no longer needed. If baby boomers want to avoid the same fate and a better model of aging than their parents they need to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. It is not enough just to drift along until something goes wrong then expect a doctor to fix it up. Once the human body has arrived at a broken down state no doctor, drug or surgery can fix it up and get it back to vital health. Yet this risk is being taken by millions of baby boomers all over the world. Many are overweight and sedentary and only 8 out of 10 participate in proper exercise. This means that the exercise program must be made up of strength maintaining exercise as the loss of strength is the greatest threat to an aging adult. Baby boomer women can change that by getting themselves started on a proper strength building exercise program so they do not become weaker and weaker with each passing decade. You can remain vital and strong so that your health span matches your life span. You can in effect grab yourself a second wind in life and be stronger than maybe you were at any other stage of your life. Use your baby boomer youngish attitude to life to propel you into a 'youthful' and dynamic 'last third' of life.
