Somehow we get brainwashed from an early age and believe that as we grow older we should slow down and take it easier. We have all heard it being said to someone You are not getting any younger you know, you really should be slowing down and taking it a bit easier at your age. We should be encouraging people to remain active not encouraging older people to become less active. Despite what you have been told by the medical establishment and other so called 'experts' over the years you do not automatically enter into a downward spiral of declining physical performance, appearance and health as you get more and more candles on your birthday cake. Physical degeneration is not an inevitable part of the aging process. You can and should be strong and fit for your entire life. The facts are that not only can you maintain, but improve your physical abilities across the course of your lifetime. You can be stronger in your forties, fifties, sixties and beyond than you are or were in your twenties and thirties. We humans can easily last to the one-hundred year mark and more importantly, we are designed to feel well, move well and look well at the century mark. But in this modern academic and technology driven sedentary world seeing a strong, fit, active energetic hundred-year-old is extremely remote. Most of us age at an accelerated rate and the shame of it - we do not even know it is happening so therefore we do nothing for ourselves to slow the ticking clock. The truth is not only the number of years in your life but the quality of those years is mostly determined by the choices you make and don't make every single day in the years before you get to mid life that matter. These choices must include proper exercise and proper nutrition if you wish to avoid sliding down the slippery slope of accelerated aging that can ruin the last 10-20 years or even longer of your life. Many people do not want to live a long time and that is understandable when we see others maybe even family members get old and suffer from poor health, lose mobility, independence and even dignity. But it does not have to be like that. The main cause of the downward spiral as we age is the loss of all-over body strength which is the result of muscle tissue and bone wasting that is nothing more than not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity. After the age of thirty muscle tissue is lost at the rate of around one half pound per year if you do nothing to stop it. This rate doubles after age 50 and leaves in its wake much physical weakness and disability. To stop this happening and to rebuild lost muscle you need a proper exercise program that contains mostly strength training exercise. As many as 10-20 years of strength loss can be recovered in just a couple of months with the right program performed at the right level of intensity (degree of effort). Seek the help of a fitness professional to get you started properly and monitor your program. You do not want to be wasting time not knowing what you are doing and simply guessing as this will not produce results. Proper exercise is not a frivolous pastime; it is an essential form of preventive medicine that every adult needs as an essential ingredient for maintaining a healthy mind and body in our mainly sedentary modern world. The human body is meant to move - a lot, not to be dormant. So get yourself some new strength and watch the quality of your life improve in ways that you will not believe kicking that 'get old, slow down' myth to the curb.
