For someone who wants to work in the health care industry, but would prefer a more administrative role, a medical billing and coding career is the perfect solution. Instead of working with patients, you can be involved in the business side of the health care industry. Medical Billers are responsible for making sure everyone is being billed correctly. This involves talking with patients or health insurance companies to make sure all invoices are paid. As a Medical Biller, you will need to understand and analyze medical invoices and coding language. You will be working with people over the phone, and sometimes in person. A Medical Coder does not have as much interaction with insurance companies or patients, but rather time is spent analyzing and coding data. Every duty performed in a medical office has a particular code assigned to it, and it needs to be coded properly in order for proper billing. A Medical Coder and Biller will often work hand-in-hand to make sure all invoices are paid properly. In some of the smaller medical offices the Biller and Coder responsibilities are handled by one person. As a Medical Biller or Coder, you will be working in a professional office environment, either in a health care facility or agency setting away from both doctors and patients. You will need to understand medical terminology and medical billing codes, which will require training and education from either a vocational school or local college. They will give you proper training in medical terminology, medical billing software, medical documentation evaluation and government programs. Graduates can work a medical billing specialist, clerk, or medical coding specialist. Once you’ve gained enough experience, professional Medical Billers and Coders can get a career working as consultants or start their own medical billing and coding company to service health care facilities. Getting education in this area has often been considered a quick and easy way to regain your financial footing in these hard economic times, but don’t believe everything you hear. Be wary of Medical Billing or Coding scams that claim to offer degrees and certificates with little training. Make sure the school you choose to train with is legitimate, and that any degree they give you will be accepted by most health care facilities. Some programs even claim that this type of career allows you to work entirely at home. Unless you have a great deal of experience and a solid client base, working at home is near impossible.
