Amenities and hotel supplies, the tools of your trade, almost certainly aren’t very exciting to you when you work in the hospitality industry. Still, it’s important to bear in mind that, among hospitality venues, hotel guests, in particular, notice the little things. Since, as a hotelier, most aspects of a guest’s vacation, adventure or special event aren’t under your control, it’s important to maximize where you can. Furnishing your hotel guest rooms with comfortable beds covered in super soft sheets, stylish ice buckets and drinking glasses, rich toiletries and durable shower curtains, among other things, will garner praise and provide a relaxing guest room. Creating a warm, inviting ambiance in any hotel room with affordable, high quality hotel supplies often adds to the guest experience. When you work in a hotel, part of your success comes from seeing everything about your hotel, from the parking lot to the guest rooms, from the guest perspective. Assuming rate and location are similar, when they’re trying to narrow their options to 2-3 hotel options, people tend to look for cost savings and entertainment options in the amenities you offer. For example, a hotel that offers complimentary continental breakfast, a fitness center and a pool will likely be chosen above another hotel that doesn’t because the implied value is higher. Today, everybody from the wealthy to the lower class are looking not just for value, but for extreme values. Hotel rooms and hotel stays in general are not exempt from this. When you look at your average hotel guest room, which items serve a functional purpose? In other words, which hotel supplies help people with a task? A blow dryer, a sturdy ice bucket and an iron and ironing board are a few great examples of functional hotel supplies that your guests not only take note of but use, too. Heavy duty, well-made metal or wood hangers that come off the bar in the closet easily and can hold a blouse, pair of pants a suit or some combination therein are valuable hotel supplies that get noticed. A binder introducing the hotel and its services and amenities along with information about things to do, places to visit, shopping, houses of worship and the like are definitely appreciated as they provide a quasi road map and some direction for your guest’s stay. It used to be that people would go on a family vacation, a business trip or a couples weekend and, once back, would share with friends and family the highlights and photos. Sometimes they’d also share an anecdotal story or two about the hotel or one of the attractions they saw and that would be it. However, that was before the invention of the internet. Now, with “Guest Reviews” sections on just about every hotel and travel website, the opinions of the traveling public carry a lot more weight. A horrible experience at a hotel will reach far more people than ever before. On the other hand, an experience that leaves a guest delighted will be shared in glowing terms. Hotel supplies, amenities and guest services have never mattered more than they do today. Ultimately, your end goal is to please your hotel guests in every way, every day. Will this necessarily happen day in and day out? No, of course not! In part because stuff happens that isn’t within your control. As well, since different things please different people, the most you can do usually is to strive for excellence.
