Antibiotics for Your Sinus Problem

Health
A lot of people suffer from a sinus problem each year, but only a few really understand the condition itself, its causes, and the range of treatments available. The sinuses are air-filled cavities in your head. Aside from making your head lighter and easier to move, it has another essential function. The sinuses protect the body from dust, pollen and other irritants in the air that your breathe. When the sinuses are infected or inflamed, the problem manifests itself in symptoms so debilitating that it can drastically affect your daily life.

Sinus Problem Due to Bacteria The most common cause of sinus problem is bacteria, such as S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and M. catarrhalis. When you have healthy sinuses, the cilia moves the bacteria and other irritants fast away from the sinuses, preventing an infection. But when there is blockage due to colds or flu, the cilia is not able to perform its job, making you susceptible to bacterial infection and other unwanted elements.

Since the sinuses are close to the nose, the main symptoms of bacterial sinus problem are stuffy nose with green or yellow mucus discharge. You will also feel pain and pressure on your face especially around the sinus areas. Frequent headaches are also symptoms of sinus problem. Other symptoms you might have to face are coughing, reduced sense of taste or smell, fever, fatigue, sore throat and toothache.

Antibiotics Against Your Sinus Problem When the sinus problem is brought about by bacterial infection, the right way to go is undergoing antibiotics treatment. Antibiotics are medicines that have anti-bacterial properties, meaning they kill bacteria and prevent them from coming back. However, if your sinus problem is not due to bacteria, antibiotics will not work, which is why it is important to consult a doctor for the right diagnosis and proper treatment.

There are several classes of antibiotics to treat sinus problems. The most commonly prescribed antibiotics are penicillins, which kill bacteria by interfering with its cell wall building function. If you are allergic to penicillin, cephalosporins may be prescribed as they also inhibit the bacteria’s cell wall synthesis. Macrolides are antibiotics that prevent the multiplication of bacteria. The newest class of antibiotics is fluoroquinolones, which hinders the DNA replication process of the bacteria. The best antibiotic for you is the one prescribed by your doctor. After being prescribed with antibiotics for your sinus problem, make sure to take your medicines on time and using the right dosage. This is because, like any other drugs, misuse of antibiotics may have severe side effects on your body. Also, while taking your medicines, monitor your body for any adverse reaction to the drug. When there is a problem, report immediately to your doctor and ask for a new prescription.
