The Iraqi parliament postponed to Monday an extraordinary session due to be held on Sunday to discuss the decision of an appeals panel to allow hundreds of banned candidates to run in the March 7 parliamentary elections. The session was to be held at 4:00 p.m. (1300 GMT) Sunday at the request of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, but the parliament decided to delay its session to Monday afternoon, speaker Ayad al- Samarrai told reporters during a news conference in Baghdad on Sunday. Samarrai attributed the delay to that the parliament had not received a judicial report from the appeals panel which decided earlier to put off the review of the cases of barred candidates until after the elections. He added that there were also no enough lawmakers to make a quorum for Sunday's extraordinary session. On Saturday, top Iraqi leaders met in the Prime Minister's office and agreed that the appeals panel should get the required details to look into the evidence of the charges against the barred candidates. However, Hassan al-Senied, a Shiite lawmaker, said that the seven-judge panel has agreed on the top leaders' request and started on Sunday to review the cases of some banned candidates. The appeals panel was formed at the request of the Iraqi parliament to look into the charges of hundreds of banned candidates accused of alleged ties to Saddam Hussein's regime. The ban list, submitted early January by the controversial Accountability and Justice Commission in charge of vetting the candidates, has the names of some prominent secular lawmakers including Saleh al-Mutlaq, head of the National Dialogue Front. The blacklist of hundreds of candidates mainly included Sunni and secular politicians. The move was being widely believed to be an attempt by the Shiite parties which currently prevail the political scene to reduce the gains of other Iraqi factions in the upcoming elections.
