How To Plan Your Home Decor And Leave Your Brains Intact

Home Improvement
The sheer variety of decorations available for home and garden can confuse many hopeful decorators. However, the best way to decorate is to browse the market, and settle on a theme for decoration before purchasing items to implement the plan. Always stay flexible in your plans, so that you can accommodate new decorations that you had not thought of, and can substitute one thing for another.

Here are some themes that you can have in mind while choosing accessories for your home and garden:

? Minimalistic. Minimalism is the in-thing in 21st century decor, especially due to the space crunch. Minimalistic decoration relies on lots of metal and glass, as these reflect light and make spaces look larger than they are. You will want to go for slim lines and translucence as much as possible, making your fully-furnished, accessorised home look as if it only has the barest minimum of furniture. Tall, straight and thin steel home accessories such as wastepaper baskets, letter openers, hanging jars and cutlery holders are both easy on the eye and durable.

? Victorian. Still highly popular in the UK, the Victorian mode of decoration is heavy on wood, iron and ornate carvings. A king-size wooden bed with an ornately carved headboard can be supplemented with an iron wall sconce, holding your reading light. Sconces originally made for candles can also be adapted for light-bulbs, giving you the 19th century look and the 21st century convenience. Wrought iron planters and tea light holders also offer a stately look. Look for silverware and tea accessories that match your overall decor - these little touches enhance the authenticity of the period look like nothing else.

? Green. A green theme doesn't mean you have to have green walls, green sofa sets and green bed linen. Today, a green theme for your home decor means that you choose sustainable materials for your home decor, and stick to colours which naturally occur in nature. For example, a light blue ceiling with adjustable yellow lights, light-coloured cotton curtains and light or dark brown wicker furniture lends a refreshing earthiness to a room. The best materials for a green home are metals and recycled wood. You can also consider buying used furniture, as it is much cheaper than new stuff and will mean reusing something that would otherwise be wasted. Adding green plants in terracotta or simple earth planters can enhance the green look. There are many easy-to-maintain plants that grow beautifully on window-sills, which can also be harvested to yield herbs for your cooking or even cosmetics. So if you want to go green in your new home, you have lots of choices for yourself.

From the walls to furniture to floor and garden, every part of your home needs to be taken into account while you decorate. You do not need to use an accessory on each part, but keep them in mind while making your plans. Browse through interior decoration stores and websites, and sleep over your investigations to come up with a decor plan that is both utilitarian and beautiful.
