Aging skincare can be challenging. There are so many different things to consider and so many different opinions about how to address the issues we are faced with. The experts cannot even agree when it comes to rating skincare products. There are different schools of thought concerning what they should contain. One of the more controversial topics right now is the benefit of sunscreen ingredients. Proponents say that sunscreens help to keep the skin younger looking and protect against skin cancer. Opponents say that many of the sunscreen ingredients were never tested for safety. They site recent studies indicating that regular sunscreen users are more likely to develop malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Those in the middle of the road say that the value of including a minor sunscreen ingredient in something that is applied once a day is questionable at best. In order to provide a benefit, they would need to be reapplied on a regular basis. Here’s another opinion, which is one that I share. For aging skincare, it makes sense to avoid overexposure to the sun by wearing a hat and sunglasses. On areas that are exposed for more than 15 or 20 minutes, the use of a zinc oxide sun-block is the best choice. Zinc oxide has been tested for both safety and effectiveness. The danger of the sun has to do with how they stimulate the activity of tiny molecules called free radicals. Free radical damage has been called the primary cause of all of the signs of aging. What’s the body’s natural defense against free radical damage? The only real defense that we have is the antioxidant. Anyone involved in rating skincare products should not give high marks to a product that is not antioxidant-rich. Antioxidants, when properly formulated for use on the skin’s surface, provide the protection that we need from free radical damage. Anyone rating skincare products should give high marks to the ones that contain tiny particles of the antioxidant coenzyme Q10. Several studies have proven that it reverses sun damage and reduces wrinkles. Antioxidants are one of the keys for aging skincare, because research has shown that the skin’s antioxidant content decreases with age, while the number of free radicals increases. Think about people you know that seemed to become older looking in a very short period of time. That was free radicals at work. Rating skincare products is easier when you know what to look for. Coenzyme Q10 is only one of the ingredients on my list. Others include wakame kelp extracts, the protein keratin and grape seed oil. For men, I suggest the use of a moisturizer containing witch hazel after shaving, not a splash on alcohol-based astringent. Feeling the burn might be a good idea for body building, but it is not good for your skin’s health or appearance, particularly as time goes by. Aging skincare is easier when you have the right tools. A good antioxidant-rich moisturizer is one tool that you cannot do without.
