Some users will arrive on your website through links from other websites or by directly typing in your website’s address, but search engines are the most important means of accessing your website. Making sure your website is accurately represented by Google, Yahoo and other major search engines without making a huge effort is very useful. Most search engines work by analyzing the content on your web pages, which means producing content that is “search engine friendly” is key to expanding the popularity of your website. There are a number of ways to make your content “search engine friendly”, such as automated navigation, inbound links, etc. Below are six basic tips for making your website friendlier for search engines. 1. Come up with a very descriptive file name for your page. The actual web address is scanned by search engines and if your address contains a word which a user is searching for, your website will get a higher ranking. This concept is useful for users too because it makes your website address easier to remember and gives them a better idea of what kind of information they will find on your website. 2. Give your title and page an informative heading. Just like web addresses are analyzed by search engines, titles are also used to indicate what type of information is on a web page. Users also want to have a good idea of what they are about to read and need a descriptive title to point them in the right direction. 3. Use keywords in your content and alt tags on your images. While this method of search engine optimization is used much less these days, it still helps. They are essential for accessibility and is good practice from the perspective of the “semantic web” since your page then describes its content as well as displaying it. 4. Have organized, descriptive headings. Search engines need to assess the actual content on the page and having headings which guide the user through the content will aid search engine as well. 5. Make descriptive links. The links between your pages should describe the content you are linking to and turn that into a hyperlink rather than using a generic “click here” or the web address itself. 6. Keep documents on the same web address. If you have an official document you should keep it on the same web address. The advantage of this is that old links from external sites will still link to the latest information, just like they would with a regular web page.
