When you own a hotel, or work in one, you want your guests to have the best of everything. While high quality at a motor lodge is certainly different than high quality in a boutique or resort hotel, it is still important and everything from the sheets in the guest rooms to the cleanliness of the lobby matters. If you’ve ever worked in a hotel, you know that there’s stiff competition for business and that everyone is committed to guest satisfaction. What satisfies guests? The basics include a clean hotel that smells fresh, which usually means you can’t smell anything when you sniff, rooms that are bright and airy with clean floors, sheets and surfaces and, finally, useful amenities. So, what exactly is a useful amenity? Ice buckets, whether they’re durable plastic or faux leather, complimentary toiletries with luxurious ingredients such as Shea butter, soft, absorbent towels, comfortable sheets, information binders in good repair that contain useful information, luggage racks that actually hold your suitcase without collapsing under its weight and irons and ironing boards that are in good repair are just a few of the more notable, useful amenities commonly found in hotels. Hotels, regardless of their class, often offer the best amenities they can afford. Typically, this means that while you’re not getting throw pillows in a motor lodge you will get generous in room coffee service in most hotels. After all the supplies used to clean and furnish a hotel reflect a certain image. Although you may not realize it, modern alarm clocks, up-to-date phone books and information binders, and towels by the pool that actually absorb water and cover the body are hotel supplies that matter. They are the details that stick out in the minds of guests when they’re asked about their vacation. Some people remember the friendly staff member who provided turn-by-turn directions to a restaurant or attraction while others remember soft carpet or clean sheets and still others remember spacious bathrooms with soft towels and luxury toiletries. People stay in hotels for a variety of reasons. Some people travel for business while others travel for pleasure. Some people are there for one night while others stay for a month or more. Regardless of why they travel, where they are staying or how long they are staying, the details still matter. Some people don’t care about the pool or the towels but they care deeply about the bed and the linens that cover it. Different amenities matter to different people but everyone deserves a quality room furnished and maintained with quality hotel supplies. When people stay in a hotel for any length of time, it is a ‘home away from home’. Having the comforts of home at hand helps make their stay comfortable, easy and relaxing, as it should be; hopefully it’s memorable as well. A hotel’s management, housekeeping, guest services and maintenance teams all share the same goal: they strive to provide each and every guest a noteworthy experience. Part of creating an experience that is memorable for all the right reasons means investing in well-priced hotel supplies which results in a win-win situation.
