Famous for its railway, olive trees, orange groves, history and beautiful scenery, it is no wonder that Soller is a popular destination for tourists to visit. Situated on the Spanish island of Majorca, the town is steeped in history and easy to reach from the airport and busy Palma. There is no shortage of things to do in Soller. The town was built in a fertile bowl-shaped valley and the surrounding countryside is perfect for long walks and strolls. If you are interested in the outdoors, then the Botanical Gardens, which lies on the outskirts of the town, is worth a visit. There are also a number of footpaths that lead into the mountains for the more adventurous walker. The town is centred around a square - the Placa Constitucio - which is the main hub and is surrounded by shops and cafes, making it a great place to be. In the centre of the square lies a fountain and to the east is the church of Saint Bartholemew, which, with its 12th century bell tower is worth a visit. The old bank is also an impressive building and can be admired from the cobbled streets. Houses in the town date as far back as the 14th century and wandering the winding streets can be a pleasant activity for those who want to relax. There is also the Picasso museum, which is a big draw for art lovers and the town also boasts the Joan Miro museum. But the Soller Railway - built in 1912 - is by far the town's most famous asset and, as the only train powered by an electric locomotive in the world, it is easy to understand why. Not only can visitors hop onto the train to travel to nearby Port du Soller, where they can relax on golden sandy beaches and take a dip in the clear blue waters, but they can also travel across the island all the way to Palma. The beautiful train journey stops at a number of Majorcan towns, including Son Sardinia, Bunyola, Caubet and Santa Maria, as it winds through the mountain pass through 13 tunnels to Palma on the other side of the island.
