Strength training exercise produces more health benefits than any other form of exercise. Weight training, often called strength training, has been shown to protect and even improve the health and strength of your muscles, bones, joints, all organs and body systems including the immune system and yes, the waistline as well. Boosting the metabolism (the body's engine) like no other exercise or activity can a balanced; overall strength training program builds and strengthens the entire body retaining youthful looks and function and reducing risk of serious disease. A strength training program can prevent and even reverse muscle loss that we once believed was just a natural part of the aging process. And, you are never too old to start building and strengthening muscle tissue. In one study, people in their 90's almost tripled their leg strength after two months of training which shows how effective it really is. Bodyweight and body composition (muscle/fat ratio) control can become a problem as we older due to us generally becoming less active and not doing enough muscle building and strengthening activity. The metabolic and calorie-burning rate slows down due to loss of lean muscle mass because of this factor. We know now that more toned muscle tissue means a higher metabolic rate (the rate your body burns fuel) and more efficient bodyweight control. When muscles are not used and kept strong, bones loss their strength as well and by age 70 most people have typically lost 25% of their bone mass. The loss of muscle strength puts people at risk of fractures as they are less able to keep their balance and can easily fall damaging weakened and brittle bones. Strength training has been shown to strengthen and thicken the bones in the fracture-vulnerable spine and hips. It also increases overall physical strength and balance, greatly reducing the chance of devastating falls. Another major benefit of going from a completely sedentary lifestyle to 2-3 sessions each week of a proper strength training program can cut the risk of coronary disease or stroke almost in half. Yet, it is a shame only 20% of adults participate in proper strength building and maintaining activity of any intensity that produces real results. Many people who do start a proper program end up quitting within a few months. They seem to expect instant results without much effort invested. But real strength and fitness does not happen like that. It is not an add-water-and-stir ethic - the quick, easy fix. Like anything worthwhile in life it grows slowly but once achieved it will protect you from aging, illness and disease and reward you with a quality of life you can scarcely imagine. To get these precious benefits we need to change our attitudes and accept that proper exercise needs to become a priority in the 21st century. It should be right up there and be rated as important as our families, friends, and our work and our social lives.
