Newbies into the world of gambling will be greeted by a rude shock. Everywhere, there are sharks and fish - some are firing, and some are being fleas. Someone talks about Fourth Street but no one seems to be leaving. All in all, it can become quite a puzzle. So, what do you do when your time comes to act after the ante, which is the first bet before you get your cards? Action, by the way, is not your act, but is the amount you wager during a session. You have several choices - ? Call - match the present bet ? Check - stay in the game without betting ? Fold - also called Drop, Pass or Pasadena - to give up and abandon the game. ? Open bet - making the first bet in the round ? Raise - raising or increasing the bet by adding to the money that's already in the pot. This also raises the stakes for your fellow players In poker, you may also add-on, or buy more chips during a tournament. If you are lucky, your aggregate winnings - total winnings - will turn in your favor and you won't end up down to the felt... in other words, broke. The felt, in fact, is the material that the poker table is made up of, so when your pile of chips goes down and you are faced with the felt, you know you are indeed in bad shape. When you are trying to recover from a loss, you can follow the Martingale system and double in - that is, stake double the amount you initially did. If you win this one, you make a net profit. In No Limit games, you may find that you can't match your opponent's bet. If that is the case, you could go All-In. By doing this, you are wagering all your chips against an equal value of the bettor's chip stack. However, you cannot go outside the betting limits placed by the casino unless they agree to exceed the maximum limit for you - which they do only in special cases. And however much you chase your lost bets to get your dough back, keep your case money intact for emergencies, you never know when a drink, meal or bed is preferable to the next game at the table. Even money bets are bets with 1:1 odds, where you get the amount you wagered in addition to recovering what you yourself staked. This is somewhat similar to double or nothing, where your winnings amount to double the wagered amount... or nothing. The world of casinos and gambling has developed over centuries, across times and places. While the associations and origins of some terms are lost and indecipherable the terms themselves remain, leaving a hint of the long and lost history of the game. This gives the language of the casino an exclusive touch, forcing new visitors to pass the test of comprehension before being able to participate. With memorable tournaments and new locations for casinos, new casino terms are continually being developed and used by gamblers. Stay in touch, and you will know it too.
