Techniques for extracting dust from the air have varied over the years. During that time, methods have focused on a dust collection and suppression system. The difference between a dust collector and a dust suppression system is how the dust is initially treated. Dust collectors form a vaccuum to collect the dust and extract it from the surrounding air. It is then collected in a filter or bag for proper disposal. A dust suppression system does not attempt to remove the dust from the physical area. Instead it places it back to its source. Best of all, a dust suppression system is more affordable. This type of system is utilized heavily in any material handling facility. A good example is the coal industry. When there is a transfer of coal from one area to another, coal dust is made. It is at these points where the greatest quantity of dust is introduced into the air, there is a nozzle or set of nozzles. The nozzles create a mist of water over the location where the coal dust forms. When the small coal dust particles come in contact with the water, the dust combines with the moisture. When this happens the weight of the dust particles increases, which causes them to fall out of the air and land back into the pile of coal from where it came from. This method has been shown to be cost effective in three ways. The surrounding area does not have to be cleaned up so there is a savings in manpower. The dust, if it was collected, would have to be disposed of, which means it is no longer a concern because it has been eliminated. Lastly, no extensive duct work system has to be part of the operation for a dust collection system. A dust suppression system will not work in every place that dust is a problem, but where appropriate, it is a very cost effective system to deploy.
