Relocating: With Professional vs. By Yourself Moving your belongings from one place to another has never been easy, but as an experienced Vancouver realtor, I have gained valuable knowledge on how to deal with this difficult issue. However, just as in any similar case, experienced people can help you with some advice that will make this problem easier. In order to help you, we will publish a series of articles about all the various aspects of a move: how much it costs, how the insurance works, how to select the right company, and much more. The subject of our first article will be how to decide if you can move using only your own resources, or if it would be better to hire a professional company. Among the crucial issues are the amount of money, time and labor you have available from your own resources. Indeed, the best thing to start with before deciding which way you choose, is to write down and estimate the amount of things you will be moving and then asking yourself the following questions: - How much time will you need for packing? - How about the furniture - are you able to manage it? - Have you any unusual, expensive or heavy items that need special attention, such as pianos or the collection of art? - Have you got friends or relatives living in the vicinity that wouldn't mind spending their weekend helping you? - For the moving, you will need a large vehicle - do you trust yourself driving something like that? - Can you finish the whole moving process over the weekend, or will you need to take some time off from work? You need to consider all of this, and when you have, you will be able to find the best option for you. Generally, there are three alternatives: 1. Full-service movers There are a lot of companies focusing on helping people to move, including packing the things, loading onto the vehicle, driving it to the new home, unloading and unpacking it. Costly as it is, this is the number one option for those with no friends or relatives available to help with moving or simply with no time getting involved yourself. In this case, the company should provide all the packaging material, straps and all the equipment they need for their work. All that is left to you is to let them do the job. 2. Self-service movers If you decide to go for this option, you will have to be more involved too. Each company may be offering a different level of service. Some companies just rent you a truck with a driver, and you have to take care of the rest yourself: pack, load, unload and upack. On the other side, there are companies that offer service including help with loading & unloading, which is useful especially if you have to move some heavy stuff. This option is mostly chosen by those who enjoy having more control over the whole process and it is of course considerably cheaper when compared to the full-service. 3. Do-It-Yourself If you manage to do the whole moving by yourself, you will save a bundle. Before deciding for this option, there are many factors to be considered, like the amount of your belongings, the distance, the number of friends and relatives available to help you and other things. This is a great way to go for people moving from a small flat or house. However, in case you are moving from a 5-bedroom house and far away, we would recommend you to hire some professionals. However you wish to organize your moving, an important part of the planning is the budget. Planning the overall budget, not just the price of the new home, is important and dificult task.
