How to Lose Weight Without Destroying Your Health

Most of the weight loss programs in the market will give you short term results. But they may also destroy your health. You just don't know it yet. Let's take a look at what this programs consist of, and explore how they can be detrimental to your health.

One of the most commonly seen weight loss approach is to go on starvation diets. Starve yourself to death, and you will lose weight for sure. That's a guarantee. Unfortunately, you are not just losing fat, you are also losing lean muscle mass as well. When you lose muscle, your metabolic rate goes down.

When it comes to fitness, you have to remember that your metabolism rate is everything. The higher your metabolism, the more efficient the energy conversion. That means you get more energy from the same amount of food, and you burn more calories even when you are not exercising.

So how can it be beneficial, especially in the long run, if the starvation diet is going to cause your metabolic rate to take a nose dive? It cannot be good. Here is how the diet will play out.

In the first 2 to 4 weeks, you notice that you are losing weight. But being ignorant, you are not sure whether you are losing fat or muscles. You know that when you step on the weighing machine, you see a smaller number. And you think that is good. After all, your goal is to lose weight, and the scales show that you are indeed losing weight.

Unfortunately, as you continue to starve yourself, you find your appetite being suppressed. And what is suppressed must eventually bounce back - like an overstretched rubber band returning to its original state.

So thinking that you have achieved your ideal weight, you start to eat again. But the body is responding differently now. For weeks, you have been starving the body. So it starts to evolve by storing anything that you eat as fat. That is just a survival mechanism. The body wants to preserve life by making sure that you have energy to burn even when you have no food to eat.

With a lower metabolism, you soon find that you gain back all the weight that you have lost very quickly due to all that fat that your body is storing. As you can see, this approach is doomed for failure from day one. You are, in fact, destroying your health.

The only way to lose weight for the long term is to build lean muscle mass. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolic rate. Your body becomes a lean fat burning machine, converting everything you eat into usable energy. That means you can continue to eat more, enjoy a better life, and still not become obese.
