What to Look for in a Web Designer

Website Design

The Internet is growing more and more popular every day, which makes it even more important for businesses of all sizes and industries to get themselves an online presence. There are a few different ways in which your company could go about acquiring a website.

Those who may not realize the kind of work and effort that goes into creating a website might try and create one for themselves, using online templates and free downloadable software that they barely know how to use. Other companies might have an employee that knows a guy who has a friend who has dabbled in the arts of graphic design and might be able to throw a website together for them. The very best option, and the one that successful companies choose from the beginning, is to hire a professional company to build and design a professional website for them.

When it comes to hiring a web designer, you should go about it as if you were hiring a new employee for your company. Do not just hire the first available option you come across. Interview several different people or companies. Research which one will give you the best customer service, the best price, and the best quality product. Make sure the design company you choose is qualified to create the kind of website you need. So what exactly should a web design company have in order to qualify?

The first step is to decide what kind of website you need, and what kind of bells and whistles the site will need to have in order to serve your customers. What kind of website are you looking for? Is it an online store where customers can purchase your products? Is it a company brochure advertising your services? Or is it an informational site, providing tips and information for potential clients? Make sure you know exactly what you need before consulting a web designer. All designers have a different set of skills and talents which may or may not be suited to the task you present to them.

The second step is to create a budget for your website. How important is it for your company to have a website, and how much are you willing to spend to make sure it is of the best quality? Let your prospective web designers know how much you can spend and they will be able to let you know how much you can get from that budget. Remember, the more you are willing to spend, the more time a web designer can spend on your website, and the more bells and whistles it can contain.

The third step, and perhaps the most important, is to make sure your prospective web designer knows how to design! Choose a company that works primarily in custom web design instead of one that produces templates. All web design companies will have a website of their own that should include a portfolio. If you do not like the look and feel of their website, then maybe they are not the web design company for you. If you do not like the design samples in their portfolio, then maybe they are not the web design company for you. It just makes sense not to hire a designer if you do not like their work.

Step four requires you to know exactly what you are paying for. A website can be very expensive, so keep track of where your expenses are going. Does the price include graphic design and web copy? Who pays for the web hosting? Does the fee include periodic updates? The more you find out beforehand, the more trouble you save yourself before you begin.

Finally, step five is to ask lots and lots of questions. You have the right to know where your money is going. Any professional design company will be more than happy to explain everything to you. If it seems like they are withholding information from you, be suspicious. Choosing a web designer can be difficult. Just remember to do your research and get feedback from friends or other professional companies on who you should choose.
