If you are involved in an East Anglia demolition project, you need to understand that there is a set procedure to follow in order to ensure that everything is carried out in the appropriate sequence and, above all, safely. It’s a good idea to involve a professional demolition company from the very earliest stages of the project. A professional demolition company will make an initial site visit and survey the proposed works and note any special requirements, as well as identifying any reclamation and cost effective recycling of materials for future use on-site or appropriate specialist toxic waste disposal. Client’s will need to check that the firm you use is registered with organisations such as SAFEMARK, (N.H.B.C. Approved) and S.S.I.P. (Worksafe Contractor Approved), carry appropriate specialist demolition insurances and that they have benchmarked and proven Health and Safety policies and procedures. The next vital stage is to compile a ‘Construction Phase Health & Safety Plan’, including site specific Method Statements and Risk Assessments. Client’s may require the Demolition company to provide enabling construction work as well, or they may need to simply undertake and complete just the demolition phase works. Whichever path client’s choose, the demolition contractor should able to identify the risks and also any dangerous situations or hazardous materials on site (subject to site specific, detailed survey) which may need speciality handling, removal and/or treatment. Once the detailed Method Statements, Risk Assessment and detailed sequenced programme of works has been prepared and approved by the construction team, including Safety Officer and all the existing mains services such as gas, electric and water made safe or isolated only then will it be time to commence the safe and controlled demolition of the structures on the site. Careful consideration should be given to the safe, ‘controlled’ removal and disposal of any dangerous toxic materials, such as asbestos or chemicals remaining from former site occupants, once these materials are removed, they will need to be transported and disposed of at an ‘approved’ licensed landfill or for further specialist treatment at approved recycling facilities, using only Licensed Waste Carriers. Once the former brownfield site has been completed to a satisfactory standard, all notifiable dangerous toxic waste safely removed and disposed including any necessary required remediation. Only then can the site can then be handed back to the client, ready for the proposed site redevelopment. All recycled, site won materials should be safely stockpiled and have the relevant certifications for use in the construction phase that follows on from the demolition.
