If you’re not already a fan of the ski resort of Tignes, in the French Alps, you really should be! Along with world-class high-altitude skiing and boarding (including on the Grand Motte glacier), plenty of other activities off the snow, great amenities, and an excellent range of accommodation in an apartment or catered chalet, Tignes has an exciting calendar of events to make a ski break even more appealing. From music festivals to ski competitions, and from Christmas markets and New Year dance parties to downhill torchlight skiing, there’s a host of reasons to tempt you to hit the booking button on that catered chalet. Tignes extends a cordial invitation to visitors to attend these (and many more!) upcoming events. Mountain Shaker (March 9-16th, 2024) Billed as a “mountain festival dedicated to board culture”, over the course of a week in March, the event comprises four competitions to determine the best of the best amateur and professional board riders. The four competitions, held at the Tignes snow park are: - The French Freeride Series (including Junior Tour and World Qualifier)
- The FISE XPerience Series
- Ski Slopestyle World Cup
- Big Air World Cup
The exciting news for visitors is that the first two competitions are open to anyone, so if you fancy your chances, get in early and secure your place. The second two competitions are thrilling for spectators, attracting the world’s best freestyle riders. Along with the main events there’s also lots of concerts, action-packed demonstrations by pro riders, and smaller events at the skatepark. Snow Pride (March 16-23rd, 2024) Tignes is proud to fly the rainbow flag and has hosted the “biggest gay ski week in Europe”, the European Snow Pride, since 2015. The event dedicates an entire week to skiing and partying for the LGBT community, and it attracts hundreds of fans – on foot and on skis/snowboard – to celebrate. For a fun-filled, fabulous week, everything in the resort is decked out in rainbow colours, from the shops and ski lifts, to the buildings and snow ploughs. Over multiple venues throughout the resort, it’s non-stop entertainment with an extensive line-up of bands, DJs, cabaret shows, pool parties, singers, dancers, instrumentalists, drag acts, and so much more! This is always an extremely popular event, so get in early and book your catered chalet. (Tignes operators often offer special deals for the week.) Black Shoes (28-30th April, 2024) If you’re not familiar with telemark, it’s a skiing technique that combines aspects of Nordic and Alpine skiing, using the back foot to balance while ‘steering’ with the front. If it sounds like an interesting challenge, why not give it a go? 2024 marks the 31st birthday of the popular telemark event the Black Shoes, which is a fabulous showcase of technique and tenacity. People of all ages and experiences are invited to participate, and along with races and jump contests, there are exhibitions and demonstrations from experts, and a host of other activities. In 2024 the theme is “Disco Never Dies”, promising plenty of partying to the disco sounds of the 70s and 80’s. Head to Tignes for More than Just Skiing These three events are just a taste of what’s on offer in the resort throughout the year.
