Yay for Gay: The Best Places in Gran Canaria for LGBT Travellers

Travel & Tourism
Gran Canaria is famous for its sandy beaches, party atmosphere and beautiful landscapes. In recent years, it has also become renowned as a popular destination for LGBT travellers who are drawn from around the world by the island’s exciting nightlife and liberal, forward-thinking views. You’ll find plenty of things to do here as the magic of Gran Canaria transfers you from the humdrum of daily life to the thrills of a bustling tropical paradise.

Kiosk Nº 7

Kiosk Nº 7 is one of Gran Canaria’s seven chiringuitos or small beachside bars which serve a range of drinks and food just metres from the dazzlingly blue ocean. The accompanying beach is locally known as ‘The Gay Beach’ and features pure white sand and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Kiosk Nº 7 is recognisable from its ever-flying rainbow flag, a selection of cocktails and food and its relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Yumbo Centrum

Less than a kilometre away from Kiosk Nº 7 is this giant shopping mall. It is an iconic European LGBT spot and one of the highlights of any trip to Gran Canaria. Transfers here are available from all over the city throughout the day, which is handy for any traveller seeking excitement. In the evening, after the range of LGBT-influenced shops and restaurants close, the area transforms into the centre of Gran Canaria’s bar and clubbing scene. Top picks include Mykonos and Terry Show, two of the island’s most happening show-bars. Both are located right at the centre of Yumbo Centrum. Annual Gay Pride Parade in Maspalomas At the heart of the European celebration of gay pride is the annual festival in the Maspalomas area in southern Gran Canaria, which draws tens of thousands of people each year. The event features two weeks of shows, parades, pool parties and organised excursions. Taking part in such a joyful and powerful celebration is the perfect way to meet new friends with whom you can explore one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

Los Almendros Resort

Sometimes it can be good to get away from the hustle and bustle of Gran Canaria’s expansive city centre and relax. At Los Almendros Resort, an LGBT-friendly complex of bungalows in Maspalomas, you can do just that. Here you will find pools and other leisure activities. For a bit of adventure, they also offer a range of exciting things to do including diving excursions in the Maspalomas Reef amongst rays and angel sharks. Maybe not so relaxing after all… How to Get There The best way to travel to the island is to fly directly into the airport located on the eastern coast of Gran Canaria. Transfers are available all over the island, but make sure to book in advance to get your holiday adventure started as soon as you get off the plane.

In Gran Canaria there is plenty to discover. Here you will feel well at home in the hot sun amongst like-minded people. It’s the perfect destination for anyone looking for an LGBT-friendly holiday.
