Galle is one of the biggest cities in Sri Lanka and is the capital of the southern province in the island. It has a long history including a period of Portuguese and Dutch colonisation and it was once a central location in ancient sea trade. There are several monuments and interesting sights to see in Galle. One of the major tourist attractions is the Galle Fort built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. This coastal town is known for the colonial architecture and you can see the influence of Portuguese and Dutch settlers on the cityscape. Although the city was severely affected by the tsunami in 2004, most of the restoration work has taken place. The city is up and running and welcomes a large amount of tourists from across the globe.
Once you explore the city and take in the sights and the sounds of the island you can always relax at a pub or a bar nearby. The nightlife in the town varies from the chilled out drink at a pub to pumped-up parties on the beach front. If you are interested in simply relaxing and enjoying a cocktail there are a number of places that are suitable for it. Most of the pubs and bars in the area have cocktails, beer or wine. For those looking for a night of fun there are towns that are close to Galle that really invest time and money organising some amazing beach parties. Around 10 kilometres away from Galle is Unawatuna that is famous for its beach parties. The parties are much like the full moon parties in Thailand. The music starts around 7pm and goes on until the wee hours of the morning. If you are still not exhausted from a night of partying then join one of the after parties that start at around 6 in the morning and finish by late afternoon.
Hikkaduwa is another place that is close to Galle and is a popular destination for beach parties. There are some parties that happen in Galle too. It's best to ask the hotel or inn you are staying at for the time and venue of such events. Visitors who want to see Galle and indulge in the nightlife have the option of choosing from any of the Sri Lanka hotels in the area.
